Be Right Back Discussion

I agree with my fellow classmates, the woman in Be Right Back made an illogical decision to purchase a robot to fill the void in her heart. It is impossible to replace a human being with something artificial. I personally believe that the woman should have moved on the natural way, instead she tried to replace the void with something that cannot comprehend human emotions, thought, and morals. Artificial intelligence will not be able to understand what makes humans human. Robots think logically not emotionally, while emotions mostly drive humans. Something artificial won't be able to understand that even if it could think for itself. Artificial life is only designed to do what it is programmed to do by its creators. Like everyday machines that deserve their purposes, such as a toaster, its purpose is to make toast. Therefore, this way of thinking can be related to the idea of self-aware machines. Throughout the episode there were clear signs that the robot she purchased made it clear that he was in fact, artificial. Instead she ignored the obvious signals to pitifully mend her heart. She tried to replace a living breathing person, with something non-living, programmed, and fake. In the end, she was the direct cause of her own demise of her happiness. It was because of her poor decisions, that she lives her despair induced life. She should have made it jump off the cliff while she had the chance. She could have gotten rid of it; erased him from her life forever, but she allowed him to stay because of her weak heart. Instead she locked him up in the attic where her daughter can have access to it. Adding onto her mistakes, she let her daughter become attached to it. The woman was weak. She was to weak willed and desperate she made the worst decision of her life. As they say, "you cannot escape the consequences of one’s actions."
