Black Mirror: "White Bear" Reflection
This past Wednesday, we watched an episode from the Netflix series Black Mirror titled "White Bear." The episode was about a woman who woke up from her dreams in a world she did not recognized. Throughout the film, she faced many challenges that put her life in danger. Everything was very confusing until the end. It was revealed that the woman was being punished for filming a little girl getting killed by her fiance. Everything that this woman was going through was an act. This act was a form of punishment for having recorded such a gross event. The society was frying this woman's brain. But if you ask me, is she really being punished I would say no. First of all, this woman does not remember anyone about the previous day, meaning she is not the same person. Second of all, making her forget everything is not really making her suffer. If they wanted to punish her, they would let her remember everything. I believe that living with the guilt is a far worst punishment. This episode revealed who broken our justice system is. Whenever someone does wrong to another person, we try to make them pay with pain. I really disagree with that. I think that instead of causing someone else wrong, we should try to help that person out by giving them treatment. If we punish someone for being a criminal, we are making ourselves criminals too. White Bear also revealed how messed up society is by having people record everything on their phones. People forget what really is important. They would record anything just for popularity instead of stepping up and doing the right thing. This episode made me realize that if we want to advance as a society, we need to change our way of living. We need to stop letting technology get in our way.

I agree, living with the guilt is a far worse punishment. I think maybe they should have done the whole thing once and then let her go to prison so that way she would have those memories and really reflect and see that what she did was just as horrible as her fiancé committing the murder.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the fact that she is not really being punished. How can she be taught a lesson when she don't even remember what she did in the first place to be put into the position of being taught a lesson? If they were going to teach her a lesson they should have her experience equal punishment where she gets to keep her memory. Instead society chooses to play their little sadistic game of frying her brain and watching and laughing at her in enjoyment. If you ask me everyone involved in this episode is sick and needs help.
