It's just a prank bro!

Recently in class we watched a show called Black Mirror, and in it a fictional character, hated and loved by many, named Waldo jokingly entered a political race to become president. Just a joke, right? Something to pass a message because who in their right minds would ever elect a fictional character who only makes fun of other people and is extremely inappropriate and unprepared, how could that ever become a president? It wasn't supposed to, Waldo was just supposed to share a message, and he did. However the joke became more and more serious when in one talk show the joke went too far and involved the person playing Waldo's personal life. In political elections personal and public things will be equally shared, so of course it's going to cause chaos. Now let's compare this to our current presidential election. We have a certain someone who is hated and loved by many and who was seen as a joke for a large majority of the race. That's right: Donald Trump. He makes fun of a lot of people, says things that he knows very well pisses people off, and is very inappropriate and rude. The similarities of Waldo and Trump are uncanny, to say the least, only difference is one bigot actually exists. Everyone in Black Mirrors never thought their vote would truly elect a fake character who clearly shouldn't be running a whole country, and many people in America never thought a hateful person like Trump would ever be elected either. Then again, you'd never truly expect that a large group of grown men and women would vote for a dead gorilla!

This election has gone from prank to presidency in just a blink, for both Black Mirrors and real life. The fact that people voted for someone who was seen as a joke tells you a lot about the people living here and in the film. Do people really think the was this new character thinks? Do they believe the same rude, semi-racist things as him? Either way, we now have someone originally seen as a laughing stock as president and have to rely on him for who knows how long to come. Hey, maybe we really will end up like Black Mirrors and Trump will soon control the world (please no). In the end, it was just a joke, right? What could one little vote towards this loved/hated person do towards our country? It's not like he'll really be elected for our country, no one would ever vote for someone who hates instead of compromises... Nah, people would never do such a thing to their country.

  1. I agree that this whole election was a joke taken too far. Through the candidate behavior and words you could see that he did possible not to be elected. However, the crowd seemed to hang on his every word. More and more people flocked to vote for this unruly person. Millions standing by his side while others seeked to fight his battle. This election showed that jokes can go to far. Judging by the face of Donald Trump, its clear he knows it too.

  2. Indeed. It is interesting to see Trump's reaction during the couple of weeks after the election. He is starting to realize what being the POTUS entails, and that the job is much harder than he had originally expected.
