Similarites between Black Mirror and 2016 election
In the episode of Black Mirror, " The Waldo Moment", we saw many similarities to the recent presidential elections. In the episode, we saw the by-election in the town of Stentonford occur. The candidates, Gwendolyn, Jamie via Waldo, and Mr. Monroe all showed traits of the candidates in our election. Waldo expresses traits similar to Donald Trump in the way in which he insults others. Mr. Monroe expresses traits similar to that of Hilary Clinton in the way in which he is target of Waldo annoyance. Gwendolyn expresses traits to that of third-party candidates in the way which she knew that more than likely that she wouldn't win. Jamie, the controller of Waldo, expresses in a way, to the typical American citizen by he didn't believe that Waldo had no business getting involved in politics and that he didn't take Waldo's chances of winning seriously until it was too late. While Waldo didn't win the election like Donald Trump, him placing second in the voting behind Mr. Monroe paved the way for him to impact not only the town but the world as a whole. The immense childish of both elections showed the darker side of human nature as in both, people reacted violently to when Donald Trump was elected and people reacted violently to Jamie trying to stop Waldo from getting elected. Black Mirror showed us many similarities to the 2016 election and showed us the true utter lows that mankind can reach.
