Waldo Trumps the Polls

In Philosophy class we watched an episode from the Netflix show Black Mirror titled "Waldo." The episode was very much like a parody of the current election. The character Waldo is an animated blue bear that obscene jokes. Despite the fact that bear doesn't have any political experience, the bear enters the race. At first it's just a simple joke designed to give the bear some attention, but as the story develops he becomes a candidate that people actually take seriously. This is very similar to the current election. When Trump was competing for the Republican primary, Trump was seen as joke, This attitude changed once he won the primaries. In the show Black Mirror, Waldo loses the election, but he manages to control China. It can be argued the reason Waldo received so much attention is because people wanted something different. This is analogous to one of the reasons why Trump's poll numbers increased. Also, the character traits and actions of Waldo and Trump are similar. Waldo and Trump can be described as "straight shooter" because what they say is simple and straight to the point even though what they say isn't really logically sound. Monroe and Clinton on the other hand would provide answers that are more nuanced and complex. This leads to some people having are hard time agreeing or understanding their views. Having said that, there is a complex of reasons why people would vote for Trump.

  1. Trump and Waldo were very similar! They were both completely unqualified for the positions they wanted to attain and yet they still had people voting for them! Sadly unlike Waldo, Trump did manage to pull this stunt off and win the election. This just shows that many people still haven’t progressed with the rest of the world in accepting others who are different.

  2. It is sad how a person with no political nor office experience can tell the citizens of the United States anything and they believe it. The president of the United States is supposed to represent America's core values. By electing Trump as President, it makes America, as a whole, seem as it though women are not valued and appreciated. It shows that America is far from being a country of unity and peace. Trump symbolizes the hatred and racism that many Americans still have in their hearts.
