This week in class we watched an episode of Black Mirror called ‘The Waldo Moment’. Waldo is a fictional cartoon character that ends up running in an election. He's bold, says what he thinks, is not mentally stable and gains a huge amount of popularity. People like him because he is not like the other politicians. He calls the other nominees out for their false agendas. He is not a politician but a comedian, who ridicules his opposition. The voice behind Waldo has a lot of moral conflict about the character. He tries to tell everyone to not vote for Waldo but the owner to Waldo’s rights takes over and tells everyone to turn on him. A small clip into the future shows that man homeless, with Waldo advertising all around him. It ends with him getting beaten by the police for throwing a bottle at the advertisement.
In the example of Waldo, we see at the end that society has clearly become more violent and segregated. Right now, the divisions are getting worse. There have been reports of many racist slurs and Islamphobia. Many of the future presidents voters view making America great again by kicking people out of the country who don't look like them or believe all of the same things as them. Because of the future presidents outspokenness on his opinions, which often included insults, lies and de-masculatimg techniques, many citizens believe they now have a right to do the same and express their dislike for others. What does this mean for the future of this country? Could this lead to more violence and segregation? I believe that we are heading down a slippery slope. The social system is fragile and having a leader who has promoted violence in his campaign may have similar effects for the future. Many can call Waldo/Trump crazy and ridiculous, but people actually listened. People were influenced. Now time will tell how society reacts.
